Temporary Lay Off... What Next?

The year is 2020, it's March and despite the sunny weather outside I feel like I'm in the middle of a disaster movie. Today is my eighth day of self isolation. I certainly never thought I would be writing those words and I also never thought I would be living through a global pandemic - coronavirus.

For everyone still trying to figure their life out in their mid twenties or older I thought everything was finally slotting into place. I spent a good part of the last 5 years desperately trying to find something I enjoyed doing and that I could get paid for. Then, a few short months ago I finally secured a job that I felt like I was born to do - sales and marketing. However, one month later I had the rug pulled from under me as due to the devastating impact coronavirus is having on businesses around the country I was temporarily laid off.

Despite assurances that I'm an asset to the company, a place I was really starting to slot into - a place that I enjoyed going to work to - myself and many others that day on 13th March got the news - you're gone (for now).

Right now there is so much uncertainty in the world and I'm pretty sure many of you reading this may be in the same boat. At 26, whether it is a selfish thought or not I finally started to properly save, thought I could start planning my future and even the possibility of one day travelling, living abroad, owning a house and starting a family didn't seem so far off. Unfortunately now, I like so many others for the time being are back to square one.

We don't know how long this virus will continue taking lives, infecting others and changing the world irrevocably. Not to be dramatic but I honestly feel a little bit like Anne Frank writing a diary entry with the fear of the unknown. The only thing that we can try to do is stay positive. I know personally that having struggled with anxiety and depression this is easier said than done. I have found a few things that are helping me and I will cling onto desperately.

A daily walk, starting 30 Days of Yoga with Adriene on Youtube, and trying to practice gratitude are all things that can help get us through this - apart from washing your hands and dousing yourself in hand sanitiser of course... seeing the joy in the little things is an important thing for your mind to focus on and above all - be kind. We are all in this together whether we like it or not so all we can do is to take it day by day - and think about the party to end all parties when all this is over!
