Becoming a Makeup Artist: My Journey

I am by no means an expert, I like to describe myself as a MUA (makeup artist) in the making however. I am still learning, and near to completing an ITEC certificate in Beauty Makeup.

I know there are plenty of makeup courses out there, but I chose mine as it provides you with a recognised qualification in cosmetic science and hygiene as well as makeup.

The ITEC just gives you that extra knowledge about skin diseases, contraindications and hygiene that will enable you to be more learned in the art of applying makeup.

I love my course, it is a night course every Wednesday from 7-10pm and our tutor is Niamh Martin, creator of Nimabrush and the Nima mitt.  For a look at her brushes click here www.nimabrush.ie

Other popular courses include LA Makeup Academy, Portobello Institute, The Waverley Academy and the International Makeup Academy (TIMA). I haven't attended any of these but I hope to perhaps take the Professional Course in LA, or take some classes in TIMA to further my makeup knowledge.

I have enjoyed every moment of my course so far and I have learnt so much, from skin types, to face and eye shapes, to contouring and highlighting, to applying makeup on other people it has been an absolute blast, and I will be so sad for it to end as it really is one of my passions, but hopefully with some more practice I will have some work to look forward in the debs/bridal side of things :)

We have to create a portfolio of looks for our exam in early March. The portfolio is to include bridal, day, evening, mature makeup and two looks of your choice. I really need to get cracking on my portfolio!

I plan to try get some counter work with a reputable professional makeup brand as it is a great way to improve your skills and build your kit.

I might do a blog post on what is needed in a beginners MUA kit. If anyone reading this would like me to do a blog post, comment below!

A like on my facebook page too wouldn't go amiss either!

Keep on blogging it beautiful

xoxo

  1. Katie your course sounds fab and how great that your tutor is the creator of the Nima Mitt, I use mine every night. I've been wanting to do a makeup course with American Beauty College down here in Cork but I have to save up first. I'd love to see a post about what's need for your makeup kit :)

    1. I know, it is great that she has so much experience behind her and gives you an idea of all the areas you can branch off into! :) Ooh I haven't heard of them but I will give them a look, it is literally the best thing I did in 2013. And since you asked, I most definitely will do a blog post about what is needed in a beginners kit!

    1. Hi Chloe, I am doing my course in Clane, in Kildare, I'm not sure if that is near you, but there are plenty of makeup courses you can do that are part time :) You should check out The International Makeup Academy I have heard good things about them. Let me know how you get on! Would a blog post on what is needed in a beginner make up artist kit be of interest to you?
